I first learned about Rethreads after a FB post went crazy complaining about the school being open when it was too cold. I try to stay away from open forums that have 1000 comments and no one will agree. I got caught up in this particular thread and at the end I proposed if kids didn’t have a coat for this cold OHIO weather we should help those kids. Sometimes we just put it out there and go about our day but this got me thinking. I didn’t just want to talk about change, I wanted to take action.

I contacted the school district social worker and she was very receptive to doing a district wide Coat Drive. I had a friend help me design a flyer, had it approved, and another friend printed signs out for me. I went to Home Depot and purchased large moving boxes, tape, and a marker for each building in the district: 6 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, a freshmen building, the high school, and an academy building. I was even able to put signs and a box up at Gametime a local indoor soccer complex for those not in the district and those who couldn’t get to the schools during school hours. I hand delivered to every building and even built their boxes. We had help advertising on social media, sites, and buildings copied flyers to distribute to the kids. This first drive was 2 weeks long. The second drive was 1 week long. As I was planning for the third drive I was told we had collected so many coats there was no storage for it! That is a great problem! I am hoping to find a way to help for next year helping fulfil another need. Through these drives we were able to donate hundreds of coats, gloves, and hats!

Here is more information for you to help Rethreads yourself!

Rethreads is a community volunteer effort with a mission to provide quality clothing to those in need. They are based out of Fairfield Church of the Nazarene and serve Fairfield and its surrounding areas. They are open 4 times a year and spend the rest of the time sorting through donations, organizing seasonal clothing, and displaying it all for the next opening.

Ways to get involved or help. Donations of gently used clothing are accepted. You can volunteer during any of the sorting hours which are on Saturdays 10am- 12pm at Fairfield Church of Nazarene on Nilles Rd in Fairfield. Volunteers will sort new donations, fold, and straighten the store. If you want to arrange a group to volunteer you can contact them to set up as well.

Let’s make our Community Stronger!
